Overview

Running low on petrol and patience waiting to pick someone up? We've all been there. From flight delays to security hold-ups, there are lots of things that can prolong your supposed “quick” airport runs.

So, what do you do? While there are heaps of onsite parking options at Tullamarine, it might not be practical to pay for a whole hour of parking if you’re just there for a quick pick-up. And let's be honest, endlessly circling the airport isn’t exactly the picture of relaxation.

But what if we tell you that you can park near the airport terminals for an hour without spending a cent? Yes, you read that right! With Melbourne Airport’s Wait Zone, drivers picking up a passenger at the airport can stay and park for up to 60 minutes - absolutely free!

In this blog, we’re dishing out how the Airport Wait Zone can save you precious time and money. We'll show you exactly how it works and how to take full advantage of this convenient option so you can spend less time stressing and more time reuniting with your traveller.

What is the Airport Wait Zone?

The Airport Wait Zone at Melbourne Airport is a specific area set aside for drivers who need to wait before picking up passengers.

Located on Mercer Drive, right near the Tullamarine Freeway, this zone lets you park for free for the first hour. It's handy if you're early or if your passenger's flight is delayed. You can wait comfortably in your car instead of circling the airport. Then, when your passenger is ready, simply drive to the designated airport pick-up zone at the forecourt of each terminal.

After the free period, you’ll need to pay $4 for up to an hour more of parking. When the first two hours are up, standard Terminal Parking fees apply.

Why Park at the Airport Wait Zone

In a nutshell, the Airport Wait Zone is a win-win for both your wallet and your sanity. Here’s why it’s everybody’s go-to for quick pick-ups:

  • Free Parking: You can park for free for the first hour, perfect for when your passenger just needs a few more minutes.
  • Location: The Wait Zone is accessible from the Tullamarine Freeway, making it easy to get in and out.
  • Saves Money: If you need more than an hour, the rates are still much cheaper than other offsite car parks.
  • Avoids Rush: Melbourne Airport’s drop-off and pick-up areas have a strict one-minute standing time limit. With the Airport Wait Zone, you don’t need to worry about timing your arrival perfectly. You can arrive a little earlier and wait without pressure.
  • Handles delays well. If the person you're picking up gets held up, you’re already in a good spot to wait.

Is It Really Cheaper to Park at the Wait Zone?

Absolutely! With the first hour free and only $4 for the next hour, the Wait Zone is the most cost-effective option for quick pick-ups.

Keep in mind that most offsite airport parking facilities around Tullamarine charge daily rates ranging from $25 to $40. Most don’t have hourly parking rates and definitely do not offer free parking options.

So, let’s say you park at the Wait Zone for two hours or less. It would only cost you $4. Comparatively, if you had to use an offsite parking facility for the same duration, you might end up paying the full daily rate of $25 or more. That's a potential savings of at least $21 just for two hours of parking, leaving you with more money for that celebratory coffee or delicious meal you planned with your arriving traveller.

Getting to the Tullamarine Airport Wait Zone

Located on Mercer Drive, the Airport Wait Zone is just off the Tullamarine Freeway or Airport Drive. If you’re driving from Melbourne CBD, follow signs for the Tullamarine Freeway (M2) and take the Citylink ramp to merge onto it. Keep right and follow signs for Melbourne Airport/Hume Freeway. Take exit 18 towards Airport/Freight/Business Park and continue onto Mercer Drive. The Wait Zone will be on your left-hand side.

Can You Park at the Wait Zone for Drop-Offs?

You can, but keep in mind that the wait zone is a little further out from the airport terminals. Though it’s close enough for driving, it’s too far out for walking. If you’re dropping off someone, you will still need to drive them to the airport’s designated drop-off zones. It’s ideal for extended goodbyes or when your passenger still needs a few minutes to sort things out before heading to their terminal gates.

Need to Wait a Little Longer?

If you find yourself needing to wait at Melbourne Airport for a longer period, there are several short-term parking options at Tullamarine that cater to extended waits:

  • Value Parking: A cost-effective choice for both short and long stays. It includes a free shuttle service to all terminals, operating every 15 minutes, around the clock.
  • Terminal Parking: Conveniently located right outside Terminals 1, 2, and 3, and just a short walk from Terminal 4. The first 15 minutes are free, making it perfect for quick visits.
  • Valet Parking: Offers the ultimate convenience where you can have your car parked for you. It's located on Level 2 in the Terminal 1, 2, & 3 Car Park, providing easy access to the terminals.
  • Premium Parking: Located on Level 2 in the Terminal 1, 2, &3 Car Park, and at Level 1 of the Terminal 4 Car Park, this option gives you under-cover parking spaces closest to the terminals.
  • Business Parking: Specifically designed for business travellers, especially those flying with Qantas. It's located directly opposite Terminal 1, offering shade-covered parking and quick access to the check-in counters.
  • Qantas Valet Parking: This facility provides direct access to Terminal 1 and offers additional services like car cleaning. It's situated within the Qantas domestic terminal at ground level.

The best part about opting for short-term parking is that, except for the Value Car Park, our onsite airport car parks are just a few minutes walk from the terminals. You can just wait for your passenger inside the terminals or enjoy a coffee at one of the nearby cafes.

Plus, if you pre-book your parking online, you can get better rates than drive-up rates. Getting inside the car parks is a breeze, too, as you’ll only need to scan the QR code included in your booking confirmation email.
