Melbourne Airport Rail Link

Melbourne Airport has joined with IFM Investors, Metro Trains and Southern Cross to unveil a blueprint for the development of the Melbourne Airport Rail Link.  

 AirRail Melbourne will be providing a proposal to the Victorian and Commonwealth Governments to build a world-class link that unlocks other rail capacity and creates thousands of new jobs.

Melbourne Airport chief executive officer Lyell Strambi commented on the plan “As Melbourne marches toward becoming Australia’s largest city our infrastructure needs to keep pace. Key to this is the development of the airport and all its elements to cope with a near doubling of passengers over the next 20 years. As we expand our runways and terminal facilities we also need world-class linkages between the airport and the city. Our vision is for a seamless passenger experience at the airport, properly integrated between the train carriage and the terminal.”

Melbourne Airport experienced a strong month of travel with 3.1 million passengers flying during August, a rise of 5.2 per cent compared to traveller figures in August 2017.

International passenger volumes were also strong, rising by 10.3 per cent on August last year.

In another significant development, Cebu Pacific Air joined Melbourne Airport launching its non-stop service between Melbourne and Manila, taking the airport’s total number of airlines to 39.

Melbourne Airport CEO Lyell Strambi said traveller numbers are performing well as expected, as overall figures for the financial year to date hit 6.4 million, substantially higher than the same period last year.

“Melbourne Airport’s latest data reveals passenger numbers from 1 July 2018 to 30 August are already at 6,390,335 – which is 4.2 per cent higher than passenger volumes between July and August in 2017,” said Mr Strambi.

“Last month more than 940,000 travellers flew in and out of Melbourne on an international service, representing growth of more than 10 per cent. Further to this, the financial year to date figures show 1.9 million people travelled on an international service, which is 8.8 per cent higher than the same two-month period last year.”

Mr Strambi said he was pleased to welcome Cebu Pacific Air to Melbourne Airport mid-month.

“Cebu Pacific Air’s service provides an important link between Melbourne and Manila – supporting tourism, and expanding our freight ability into Asia,” said Mr Strambi.

"Our international network is growing at an unprecedented rate and we’re in a great position to be able to facilitate connections all over the world. It is our aspiration to take tourism, freight and trade opportunities to another level through building a third runway, which would allow us to cater to around 100 aircraft movements per hour, up from 50 an hour, which we currently service.

“We will continue to pursue new destination opportunities, while improving our asset, now and into the future.”
