Melbourne Airport’s total passengers grow by 7% in August

Sep 20, 2012

International and domestic passenger numbers at Melbourne Airport increased by 7 per cent during August to reach a total of 2,445,709 passengers.

Melbourne Airport CEO, Mr Chris Woodruff, said that capacity increases were helping to overcome the challenging global conditions.

“It’s clear that our international passenger growth has steadied from the double digit figures we saw 18 months ago but we continue to achieve solid international growth, particularly from key markets.”

International passengers grew by 5 per cent compared to August 2011. China continued to grow strongly, with passenger numbers up by 17.5 per cent on the same period last year.

“We’ll continue to work with our international airlines to boost capacity to support Victoria’s global connectivity and our appeal to visitors as a premier destination for major events, tourism, business and education.”

Domestic passengers increased by 7 per cent to 1,887,301 passengers compared to August last year.

“For the third consecutive month we’ve achieved solid growth domestically.  Over the last month we’ve also seen domestic airlines announce capacity increases which will further help growth in this market,” said Mr Woodruff.

“To support our domestic growth we continue to plan for new domestic terminal facilities, additional airfield parking and road upgrades.”

“Access to Melbourne Airport continues to be a priority and along with substantial improvements to our internal road network over the next year or so, we are also thinking about longer term access for the 60 million passengers a year forecast by 2033.”
