Another step forward for Forecourt Redevelopment
Nov 08, 2011
The former premium parking area at Melbourne Airport is now closed for construction, as part of Stage 1 of the Forecourt Redevelopment project that aims to ease congestion in and out of the airport precinct.
The area was closed at midnight on 7 November, as temporary fencing was erected around the area, in preparation for construction to start.
A team of about 10 Melbourne Airport staff and contractors worked through the night to minimise disruption to visitors.
Victorian Hire Car Association (VHA) drivers were directed to their new pick-up areas outside the Qantas Terminal (Q1) and in the Express Business Parking Area near Virgin Australia (T3).
Booked taxis are now located within the short term car park, along with couriers and Parkroyal guests. Disabled parking is available on each level of the short term car park.
Signage to assist drivers to new parking areas has been installed and Melbourne Airport operations staff are stationed at entry points to the short term car park and at Arrivals Drive to direct traffic.
By the end of the year, the former premium parking area outside the Terminal building will re-open as the Outer Lane for general public 1 minute pick up, disabled pick-up and small bus pick-ups.
As part of Stage 1, buses and general public vehicles are being separated to also improve traffic flow at the front of the arrivals area of the airport. New bus and taxi lanes will be marked and will come into effect at the end of the year.
