Taxi Management System

New Taxi Management System is coming to Melbourne Airport in September 2017

As a part of Melbourne Airport’s continuous commitment to invest in the airport’s service levels, facilities and infrastructure to manage forecast growth and to support Victoria’s expanding economy, it is implementing a new Taxi Management System in September this year.

The system will improve the operational efficiency of the movement of the taxis between the holding yards and terminal taxi ranks resulting in more accurate and timely taxi supply to meet passenger demand.

What is changing

Currently taxi drivers gain access to holding areas and terminal taxi ranks through a hand held swipe card. The new system will enable taxi drivers to enter the holding areas and ranks using e-TAG technology supported by Licence Plate Recognition (LPR).

From 26 September 2017, taxis will be required to carry on board an e-TAG and have an active CityLink account to access the taxi holding areas and terminal taxi ranks at Melbourne Airport.

Taxi Access Fees will be charged directly to the CityLink account associated with the e-TAG and will be separately identified on the statement or invoice.

The Taxi Access Fees are not changing from the current access prices.

As per current processes, urban and country taxis are not authorised by the Taxi Services Commission to pick up passengers from the Melbourne Airport taxi ranks and are therefore not affected by this change.

What you should do

As a taxi operator or driver you should ensure that you have an e-TAG fitted in each taxi linked to an active CityLink account.

After 26 September, taxis won’t be able to access the taxi holding areas and terminal taxi ranks at Melbourne Airport, if:

  • they forget their e-TAG
  • they are travelling on a CityLink pass
  • their account is suspended

Find out more from CityLink about how to keep your account active to make sure your access is as smooth as possible at

Key dates

17 July – 25 September: Taxis will continue to access the airport in the current manner using their access cards. Whilst eTAGs will be fitted, your CityLink account will not be charged until new system goes live.

26 September 2017: New Taxi Management System goes live at the Melbourne Airport
