Aug 20, 2013

Melbourne Airport is pleased to announce it handled 2,703,447 total passengers in July, an increase of 194,800 passengers or 8 per cent compared to the same period last year.

In addition, for the first time more than 30 million passengers travelled through Melbourne Airport during the 12 months ending July 2013.

Melbourne Airport CEO, Chris Woodruff, said that it was a significant milestone for Melbourne Airport.

International passengers grew by 12 per cent during July 2013 to reach 660,411 passengers.

“The successful British Lions and Liverpool Football Club tours highlight the importance of Melbourne’s major event calendar in attracting visitors to our city and state,” said Mr Woodruff.

Countries with strong growth in passport holders for July compared to the same time last year included Taiwan, the United Kingdom, Ireland, China, Singapore and Thailand.

Domestic passengers grew by 6 per cent taking the monthly total to 2,043,036 passengers.

“As the home base for Jetstar and Tigerair, Melbourne is Australia’s centre of domestic aviation growth and early works for our new T4 domestic terminal project to support this growth are now underway,” said Mr Woodruff.

“We’re continuing to improve access to Melbourne Airport with construction on doubling the capacity of our main entrance, Terminal Drive, well underway.”

“During the month, the Federal Government also approved the plans for extension of Airport Drive which will provide an alternative entry point directly off the M80 Western Ring Road for traffic coming from the West or into our busy business park and freight precinct.”

“The works are part of our transformation of Melbourne Airport which will include a major upgrade and expansion to our international terminal with new aircraft gates and check-in counters, and efficiency improvements in baggage and border processing areas.”
