Melbourne Airport achieves 5% total passenger growth for third quarter

International and domestic passengers at Melbourne Airport increased by 5 per cent during the third quarter of 2012/13 to reach 7,455,992 passengers.

International passengers grew by 3 per cent during the quarter compared to the same period last year, taking international passengers to 1,813,144.

Melbourne Airport CEO, Mr Chris Woodruff said, “Asia was the strongest performing market for the quarter and continues to make a significant contribution to Victoria’s economy through international visitor expenditure.  Passport holders from Hong Kong, Taiwan, China, Vietnam and the Philippines all grew by more than 10 per cent.”

Domestic passengers increased by 5 per cent during the third quarter compared to the same period last year, reaching 5,642,848 passengers.

“Federal Government approval of the major development plan for our new domestic terminal is an important milestone for the project which will support future growth for domestic aviation at Melbourne Airport.”

“Subject to finalising agreements with our airline customers, we are looking forward to getting on with construction with a view to having the new terminal operational in mid-2015,” Mr Woodruff said

For the month of March 2013, international passengers increased by 4 per cent to reach 592,844 passengers. Australian passport holders increased by 4 per cent compared to March 2012. Domestic, passengers increased by 6 per cent compared to the same month last year, to reach 1,980,375 domestic passengers and taking total passengers to 2,573,219 for the month.
