Melbourne circus producer Daniel Rabin is 'Off to Edinburgh' thanks to Melbourne Airport
Oct 15, 2007
The Melbourne Airport ‘I’m Off To Edinburgh’ Award for Best Newcomer at the 2007 Melbourne Fringe Festival was presented to Melbourne circus producer Daniel Rabin at the Fringe Awards Ceremony on Saturday night. As part of his award, Daniel will be jetting off to the 2008 Edinburgh Fringe.
The brains behind the extremely successful DIVINE CARNIVAL at the Northcote Town Hall, Dan captured the judges’ attention for his inventive programming and faultless presentation of numerous shows, creating the Melbourne Fringe’s first ‘circus hub’. In addition to his new role as a producer, Dan is also the director of progressive circus company Throw Down, a freelance circus performer, rigger and circus trainer. Most recently Daniel has been on tour with Circus Quirkus, a sponsored touring circus show for underprivileged audiences.
“Dan’s dedication to providing opportunities for Melbourne’s circus performers make him an ideal recipient of the Melbourne Airport ‘I’m off to Edinburgh’ Award’,” said Melbourne Airport CEO Chris Woodruff. “Melbourne is the home of Australia’s circus scene, and we’re proud to be helping Daniel fly the Melbourne flag at the 2008 Edinburgh Fringe.”
The Melbourne Airport 'I'm Off To Edinburgh' Award for Best Newcomer is selected by recommendations from Melbourne Fringe judges crossing over all performance genres. The winner must be from Victoria and have presented an event in a performance based category - performance, comedy, cabaret, music, circus, dance/movement or puppetry. For the first time in 2007, the judges have given the award to a producer of work rather than an artist.
The Melbourne Airport ‘I’m Off To Edinburgh’ Award provides the winner with flights and accommodation to attend the Edinburgh Fringe in 2008. This gives Dan an incredibly exciting opportunity to learn more about presenting independent productions and see how the business works on a global scale.
Melbourne Airport is committed to providing the opportunities for Australia’s most exciting new artistic talent to learn from the experience of attending some of the world’s most prestigious international arts events, such as the Edinburgh Fringe, Berlin Film Festival and Venice Biennale Vernissage. “The goal of our awards is to put the careers of some of Australia’s unique talents on the international map” said Mr Woodruff.
