Melbourne Airport welcomes Qatar decision
Mar 16, 2007
Melbourne Airport has welcomed today’s announcement by Federal Transport Minister Mark Vaile of a successful air service agreement with Qatar.
The agreement provides Qatar Airways with the opportunity to commence planned daily services between Melbourne and Doha, and signals the completion of over eighteen months of negotiations.
Melbourne Airport CEO Chris Barlow congratulated the Australian Government and the Government of Qatar on reaching the agreement, saying that the outcome allows access to Melbourne for an airline with available aircraft and a network that reaches significant markets.
“Qatar Airways has long expressed a strong desire to introduce daily flights to Victoria, and this agreement will allow them to now act on establishing their Australian services at Melbourne Airport,” said Mr Barlow.
International seat capacity at Melbourne Airport has been in decline for more than 12 months, with 500,000 fewer international seats in 2005/06 compared to the previous year. Today’s announcement has the potential to provide a significant boost in seats at Melbourne Airport.
