Apr 30, 2007
19-year-old comedian Josh Thomas has been awarded the 2007 Melbourne Airport Best Newcomer Award at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival.
Josh is the youngest ever recipient of the prestigious Comedy Festival award and will now travel to the UK later this year to attend the Brighton Comedy Festival.
Josh’s show entitled Please Like Me was described by Helen Razer, arts critic from The Age as “One of the festivals best, Josh’s stories are populated by real, warm people. His eye for bathos and tat is extraordinary.”
On winning the award Josh said “It’s fantastic, a complete shock.“
“Josh is exactly what we think emerging talent should be about, he’s young, talented and very ambitious,’’ said Melbourne Airport spokesperson, Thomas Perry.
The award was presented at the 10th annual Barry Awards, held on Saturday night.
Josh was awarded the Melbourne Airport award from more than 40 newcomers at this year’s Melbourne International Comedy Festival. At the tender age of 19, Josh is a veteran of 300 gigs including a performance at the International Edinburgh Fringe Festival where he made the finals of 'So You Think you’re Funny', Edinburgh's equivalent to Raw Comedy.
In the last twelve months, Josh has performed on the Comedy Channel’s Stand Up! Australia and supported the likes of Dave Hughes in front of a crowd of 1500. He has been heard on the ABC’s Triple J Breakfast Show, Brisbane’s 612 ABC, Triple M Brisbane and the Triple Z Comedy Show.
The Melbourne Airport Best Newcomer award is a key part of Melbourne Airport’s Emerging Talent Program, an initiative to support emerging Victorian talent in a wide range of performance and visual arts.
The program supports best newcomer awards at iconic Melbourne cultural institutions: the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, the Melbourne International Film Festival, the Melbourne Fringe Festival, Linden Centre for Contemporary Arts and the Mietta Song Recital.
Winners attend various prestigious international events as part of their award, including the Brighton Comedy Festival in the UK, the Berlin Film Festival, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and the Venice Biennale Vernissage.
