Melbourne Airport emerging talent wins at Cannes
May 28, 2006
Up and coming Melbourne filmmaker Julius Avery was presented the Jury Award at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival for his recent work Jerrycan. This comes less than two years after he was awarded the 2006 Melbourne Airport Emerging Australian Filmmaker award for his earlier project End of Town at the Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF).
Melbourne Airport’s Emerging Talent Program provides sponsorship and an award to five Melbourne based arts organizations. Each winner receives funding towards the development of their work and travel to a related international event.
Melbourne Airport enjoys a successful partnership with MIFF, sponsoring the Emerging Australian Filmmaker Award every year. The Melbourne Airport Emerging Australian Filmmaker receives $10,000; “this has been a very positive outcome for me and allowed me to make more films” said Mr. Avery.
“This is the second time this year a Melbourne Airport Emerging Australian Filmmaker has gone on to win a major international film prize. Our 2007 Award winner Warwick Thornton won his category at the 2008 Berlin Film Festival. Congratulations are to go to the MIFF judges for selecting quality talent” said Geoffrey Conaghan, General Manager Corporate Affairs.
The arts are a significant brand strength for Victoria and a major draw card for tourism to Melbourne. Melbourne Airport is looking forward to presenting the 2008 Award to another clever, young filmmaker chosen by Australia’s leading film festival.
The next Emerging Talent Program Award will be presented by Minister for the Arts Lynne Kosky on 5 June at Linden – Centre for Contemporary Arts. The winner of this visual arts prize will attend the Shanghai Biennale. For more details contact Linden directly on either (03) 9209 6794 or check their website www.lindenarts.org.
