Melbourne Airport to welcome daily A380 Emirates service
Aug 07, 2012
Melbourne Airport is looking forward to the arrival of the new Emirates A380 services from October 2012.
Melbourne Airport CEO, Chris Woodruff, said that the new Emirates A380 services strengthened Melbourne’s position as Australia’s global gateway.
“Melbourne Airport was the first airport in Australia to be A380 ready and we are continuing to invest in our infrastructure and facilities to support the growth of A380 services to Melbourne. We have opened two additional international gates and upgraded more of our aerobridges to be A380 capable. We have invested almost $50 million in two additional baggage reclaim units in our international arrivals area which adds to our A380 capability.”
“For the past few years, Melbourne Airport has experienced strong international passenger growth and our curfew free status plays a large part in this growth and in attracting new services to Melbourne. Combined with our single terminal precinct, our curfew free status provides airlines and passengers flexibility and convenience. This is particularly important for markets such as Europe and the Middle East where Melbourne, and Australia, are part of a global network,” said Mr Woodruff.
“Emirates is looking forward to further strengthening its commitment to Australia with the launch of its A380 service to Melbourne, which will become the airline’s twentieth A380 destination on Emirates’ rapidly expanding global network,” said Salem Obaidalla, Emirates’ Senior Vice President, Commercial Operations Far East & Australasia.
Mr Woodruff continued, “As a leading, full service international carrier, Emirates’ decision to introduce a daily A380 service to Melbourne is a great vote of confidence in our city and state as a global destination.”
“Emirates is a valued customer of Melbourne Airport, and its operations in Melbourne make a significant contribution to the economic and social fabric of our city and state. The daily A380 services are direct to Dubai and direct to Auckland and are also important for Victoria’s tourism industry. We will continue to work with Team Melbourne and our airline customers to attract new services and additional capacity to Melbourne.”
In addition to the new daily A380 service, Emirates also flies daily to Dubai via Singapore and daily to Dubai via Kuala Lumpur. Emirates’ daily A380 Dubai-Melbourne-Auckland service commences on 2 October.
