Runway Maintenance Overlay

We are pleased to advise that on the 28 October 2011, Melbourne Airport completed the Runway Overlay Project.  During the project, runways 09/27which runs East/West, and 16/34 which runs North/South, were milled and overlaid with asphalt.  The runway lighting system was also replaced.  The $45 million maintenance project has been essential Melbourne Airport’s provision of facilities in optimal operational and safety condition.

Successful completion of the project faced some major challenges.  Inclement weather conditions caused the loss of over 80 shifts, which is equivalent to approximately 13 weeks.  The team adopted range of initiatives to minimize the delays, and the projected was finally completed with the completed only six weeks behind schedule.

The works were primarily conducted between midnight and 6am daily.  The nature of the work meant that some existing flight paths were used more or less at times, impacting both local residents and airlines.

The video below provides an insight to what was involved each night of the works.
