Forecourt Redevelopment

The area in front of Melbourne Airport’s terminal building is used by a variety of ground transport operators and services, as well as for public drop-off and pick-up of passengers.

To reduce congestion and provide airport users with a better experience, Melbourne Airport is undertaking an $18 million project that will change the way the forecourt operates.

The first stage of the Forecourt Redevelopment, completed on 22 December 2011, will ease congestion in front of the terminal building, making it easier for passengers to arrive in the pick-up area, and depart.

The development includes:

  • A new one-minute public pick up zone in the "Outer Lane"
  • Additional parking for VHA hire car vehicles
  • Separate lane for authorised bus, shuttles and coaches and private cars
  • Taxi only share lane with authorised buses to improve traffic flow.

Stage 2 of the forecourt project will commence in 2012. Melbourne Airport is currently identifying and assessing design options including traffic exit efficiency and the separation of pedestrians and vehicles.

The Forecourt Redevelopment project complies with Melbourne Airport Master Plan 2008 and the Ground Transportation Plan, both of which refer to maximising road infrastructure and the segregations of vehicle movements in front of the terminal.
